Last summer, a concerned group of home-owners along the stretch of Belgrade Stream from Wings Mills dam to the marsh at Messalonskee Lake, contacted 7 Lakes Alliance to chat about the growing infestation of variable-leaf milfoil in the stream.
Sharon Mann, the invasive aquatics director at 7 Lakes, graciously stopped by to speak to us and take a quick tour of our area. We expressed our desire to do more and assist with efforts currently underway to treat and manage milfoil on Messalonskee Lake.
Later in October, after another meeting of homeowners and concerned citizens along the stream was held. We were informed that the DEP was considering Belgrade Stream as a possible treatment area in 2026.
While we wait for the final decision from the DEP, it was decided to form a small group representing our heavily-infested area of the stream and the Friends of Belgrade Stream was formed under auspices of 7 Lakes Alliance.

We created and printed signage, brochures, and postcards, the website launched, and we began reaching out to landowners and recreational users.
